Hestevelferd i franske “parcours”

I denne studien har forskere brukt en bestemt protokoll (AWIN) for å vurdere velferden til hester som lever i såkalte «parcours» i Frankrike.

En «parcour» er et område bestående av en blanding av natur- og kulturlandskap, der det er vanlig å holde beitedyr.

AWIN protokollen har fire fokusområder; Fôring (riktig ernæring og fravær tørst), oppstalling (mulighet for å hvile og komfortabel temperatur), helse (fravær av skader, sykdom og smerte) og atferd (mulighet til å vise naturlig atferd, god relasjon til mennesker og mulighet til å oppleve positive følelser).

Her er to utdrag fra hhv innledning og konklusjon:

“Welfare scientists consider single-box housing to present unfavourable aspects for horse welfare (Ruet et al. 2019) since confinement prevents horses from engaging in highly motivated behaviours such as movement (Chaplin & Gretgrix 2010), social relationships (Søndergaard & Ladewig 2004) and natural feeding behaviour.”

«The findings showed that horses kept on ‘parcours’ presented few abnormal behaviours such as stereotypies, could move freely for most of the day and interact with conspecifics, at the same time maintaining a good relationship with humans. The main welfare concerns were related to the availability of water sources, lack of artificial shelters and presence of superficial integument alterations such as alopecia, probably linked to suboptimal control of external parasites.”
